How to use the lineup builder
Pick a sport at the top. Each one opens with a standard starting lineup on the field and a few spare players on the bench, numbered so you can start right away. Tap a player to type a name, a shirt number or a position, and tick Captain to add the armband. Drag any player anywhere with a mouse or a finger; players always stay inside the lines.
The list beside the field (below it on a phone) is the roster. Bench takes a starter off. For a substitution, tap the player on the field, then press Swap in next to the bench player, or drag the bench player by its dotted handle onto the starter. Add player puts a new player on the field while there is room, otherwise on the bench. Give the lineup a title and a date and write notes for the team. Everything is saved in your browser as you go, so you can close the page and come back later.
When the lineup is ready, Download PNG saves a picture with the title, the field, the bench and your notes, ready for the team chat. Print gives a sheet with the field and a roster table, Copy as text puts a plain list on the clipboard, and Share link or Export file sends the whole lineup to another coach. Each sport keeps its own lineup, so switching from soccer to basketball and back loses nothing. As a team lineup maker it suits a club coach, a PE teacher or a parent running a youth team.
Sports, positions and formations
- Soccer (football in most of the world): 11, 9, 7 or 5 a side with a goalkeeper. The 11 a side formations are 4-4-2, 4-3-3, 4-2-3-1, 3-5-2, 3-4-3, 5-3-2, 4-1-4-1 and 4-5-1; the small-sided shapes are common youth layouts. Type any other shape, such as 4-1-2-1-2, in Your own shape. The formation builder adds the opponent on the same pitch.
- Basketball: five on a half court, labeled PG, SG, SF, PF and C. The basketball lineup builder adds a minutes plan.
- Volleyball: six players in rotation positions 1 to 6, numbered the standard way: 1 right back (the server), 2 right front, 3 middle front, 4 left front, 5 left back, 6 middle back. Rotate moves everyone one position clockwise: the player in 2 moves to 1 and serves, 1 moves to 6, 6 to 5, 5 to 4, 4 to 3 and 3 to 2.
- Baseball and softball: nine fielders on a diamond (P, C, 1B, 2B, 3B, SS, LF, CF, RF) and a batting order from 1 to 9 that you rearrange with the arrows. Tick Use a designated hitter in Settings and the DH bats in the pitcher's spot; whether a DH is allowed depends on your league.
- Hockey: a goalie (G) and five skaters (LD, RD, LW, C, RW) in one half of the rink.
- Football: a generic offense of 11: five offensive linemen (OL), a tight end (TE), three wide receivers (WR), a quarterback (QB) and a running back (RB). Drag them into any set you run.
Position labels are only a starting point: tap a player and type the label your team uses. On game day, keep the score with the soccer scoreboard, the basketball scoreboard, the volleyball scoreboard or the baseball scoreboard.
Keyboard shortcuts
- Tab: go to the next player on the field (Shift+Tab goes back)
- Arrow keys: move the selected player a little; hold Shift for bigger steps
- Enter: edit the selected player's name
- N: new player
- B: send the selected player to the bench, or back onto the field
- Delete: remove the selected player
- R: reset the formation
- O: rotate (volleyball)
- U or Ctrl+Z: undo
- F: full screen; Esc: deselect, or leave full screen
Shortcuts do nothing while you type in a box, so names never trigger them.
Questions
How do I save and share a lineup?
It saves itself in this browser after every change. Share link copies a link that opens the same lineup on another device. A long roster with long notes may not fit in a link; then use Export file, send the file, and load it with Import file.
Can I print the lineup for the team?
Yes. Print prints the field with every player, a table of numbers, names, positions and who starts, plus your notes, in black on white. Download PNG makes an image for a group chat or a slide.
Can I show the lineup on a TV in the locker room or a classroom?
On a laptop connected to the TV, press Open display window and drag that window to the TV, then press Full screen in it. It shows the field, the starters and the bench in large type and follows every change you make in the main window.
Is this starting lineup maker good for youth teams?
Yes. Soccer has 9, 7 and 5 a side with common youth shapes, every position label can be changed, and the bench holds the rest of the squad. Use the notes for who plays which half.
Is anything sent to a server?
No. Names, numbers and notes stay on your device. Nothing is uploaded and there is no sign-up; a share link carries the lineup inside the link itself.
