How to use the tabata timer

The timer is already set for a classic tabata workout. Press Start or tap the clock: a 10 second get ready countdown gives you time to get into position, then round 1 begins. Work shows on a solid face, rest on a plain one, and the round number sits under the clock so you always know how many are left. The last three seconds of every part beep once per second, work starts on a high tone and rest on a low one, and a horn ends the workout.

Tap the clock to pause if you need to. Skip and Back move between parts and Reset starts over; all of them can be undone. The clock is calculated from real time, so a locked screen or a reload does not change it.

The tabata format and your settings

A tabata block is 20 seconds of work followed by 10 seconds of rest, repeated 8 times. On paper that is 4 minutes. The timer leaves out the rest after the eighth round, so the clock ends when the last burst ends and shows 3:50 of workout after the get ready countdown.

Many people do several tabata blocks in one session. Set Sets to 2 or more and choose the rest between sets (1 minute by default). You can also change the work and rest times or the number of rounds for an easier or longer version; the screen and the total follow your numbers. A finished workout is added to the log, and Chart shows the whole plan as bars.

For other work and rest times or a list of named exercises, the interval timer is the better fit, and the EMOM timer runs one set at the top of every minute.

Questions

How long is a tabata workout?

One block is 8 rounds of 20 seconds on and 10 seconds off, 4 minutes counted in full. This timer stops after the last 20 seconds of work, so it shows 3:50 plus the get ready countdown.

Can I change the 20 and 10 seconds?

Yes. Open Settings and type new work and rest times, a different number of rounds, or more sets. Your changes are saved in your browser for the next visit.

Can I hear the timer with music playing?

The beeps play through the same speaker as your music, so keep the music a little lower. The face also turns solid during work and plain during rest, so you can follow it by eye.

Is there a voice counting down?

No. The timer uses short beeps, a tone at each change and a horn at the end, with no spoken words, so it works the same in any language and in a quiet room.
