How to use the hockey scoreboard
When a team scores, press +1 Goal under it, or tap its big number. A goal is also a shot on goal, so the Shots count rises with it. Press Shot for every save the goalie makes. Start runs the period clock down from 20:00, it shows tenths in the last minute, and the horn goes off at zero. Next moves on to the second and third period and then to overtime.
Took a penalty? Press 2 min or 5 min under the guilty team. A timer chip appears under that team. It only ticks while the game clock runs, so it freezes at every whistle, and it carries on into the next period. At zero it beeps and goes away. PIM totals each team's penalty minutes for the game.
Open display window puts a black, read-only board on a second screen with both scores, shots, the clock, the period and every penalty counting down. Periods, overtime and penalties
The board starts with three periods of 20 minutes, the length used in the NHL and in international hockey. Youth, school and adult rec leagues often play shorter periods, and the length depends on your league and level, so set it under Period length in Settings. Overtime also differs from league to league, so its length is a setting too (5 minutes to start).
Each penalty timer runs on its own. Under NHL and international rules, a 2 minute minor usually ends early when the other team scores a power play goal: tap that timer to clear it. A 5 minute major keeps running. If your league has other penalty lengths, start the nearest timer and correct the clock time, or clear it by hand.
Keyboard shortcuts
- A or ←: goal for the left side; L or →: goal for the right side
- Shift plus A or L: take that goal back
- 1 to 4: the left team's Goal, Shot, 2 min and 5 min buttons; 6 to 9: the same for the right team
- Space: run or stop the clock; P: next period
- S: switch ends; U or Ctrl+Z: undo; F: full screen; M: mute
Questions
Does a goal count as a shot on goal?
Yes. In hockey statistics every goal is also a shot on goal, so the board adds one shot for you with each goal. Undo removes both.
How do I end a penalty early?
Tap the penalty timer under the team to clear it, for example after a power play goal ends a minor. Undo brings it back if you tapped the wrong one.
Can I use shorter periods for a youth game?
Yes. Open Settings and type your period length in minutes, for example 12 or 15. You can also switch the clock to count up.
Will the penalty clocks stay right if I refresh?
Yes. Every timer is stored against the game clock in your browser, so a refresh, a closed tab or a sleeping laptop picks up exactly where the game was.
